How It Works

Flange And Threads.
Restored In Place.

The yaw ring gear mounting flange gets worn or damaged, and its threaded holes with it. Our mobile uptower machine restores both - flange surface and threads - without removing anything from the turbine.

How the repair works

  • The machine mills the flange to obtain the pre-defined tolerance levels
  • It bores - and where needed enlarges - the threaded hole, preparing it for a new insert
  • If the job requires it, a helicoil bushing or a special bushing is inserted

Why repair uptower

The repair is completed in place, restoring the functionality of the yaw system and stopping further damage development - before a worn flange becomes a bigger problem.

Technical Specifications
Equipment Mobile uptower milling machine
Flange machining To pre-defined tolerance levels
Thread repair Bored and enlarged for new insert
Inserts Helicoil or special bushing
Repair location Uptower, in place
Repaired Uptower Flange and threads restored in place - no component removal.
Function Restored The yaw drive mounts on a flange machined back to pre-defined tolerances.
Damage Stopped Repairing early stops further damage development in the yaw system.
Threads Recovered Damaged holes are prepared for helicoil or special bushings instead of being abandoned.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a worn yaw gear mounting flange be repaired uptower?

Yes. A mobile machine mills the flange back to the pre-defined tolerance levels directly in the turbine.

What happens to damaged threaded holes?

The machine bores and, where needed, enlarges the threaded hole to prepare it for a new insert. If the job requires it, a helicoil bushing or a special bushing is then inserted.

Why repair the mounting flange early?

A repaired flange restores the functionality of the yaw system and stops further damage development before it spreads.
